Every quote should account for four things: how many cameras, what resolution and housing they need, how much video storage you want, and how hard the wiring job is. Get those four right and the price follows — no guesswork needed.
What Drives the Price
1. Camera count and placement
More cameras means more cost, obviously — but placement matters just as much. A camera covering a wide-open parking lot needs different optics than one covering a cash register six feet away. Entrances, registers, and cash-handling areas are usually the priority; aisles and back rooms come next.
2. Resolution and low-light performance
2MP (1080p) cameras are the current baseline for readable footage. 4K cameras cost more per unit and eat more storage, but they're worth it for spots where you need to zoom in later — license plates, faces at a distance, or a register area where you might need to verify a transaction. Good low-light/IR performance also adds cost but matters a lot for exteriors and after-hours coverage.
3. Wired (PoE) vs. wireless
Wired PoE (Power over Ethernet) cameras are more reliable — one cable carries both power and video, with no Wi‑Fi interference or battery to manage. They cost more to install because they need cable runs, but for a business relying on this footage for insurance, disputes, or theft claims, that reliability is the point. Wireless cameras are faster and cheaper to install but are a compromise, not an upgrade.
4. Storage: local NVR vs. cloud
A local NVR (network video recorder) is a one-time hardware cost with no ongoing fee — you own the box and the footage lives on-site. Cloud storage trades a lower upfront cost for a recurring monthly fee per camera, and it's convenient if you want automatic off-site backup of your footage. Many systems we install use both: local NVR for full-resolution footage, with critical cameras also backed up to the cloud.
5. Existing wiring (the bodega/retail shortcut)
If you already have an old analog DVR system with coax cabling in the walls, you often don't need to rewire at all — HD-over-coax and Ethernet-over-coax adapters let you reuse that cabling and upgrade to HD or IP picture quality. Realistic Cost Ranges by System Size
These are general industry ranges for installed systems (hardware + labor), not a quote — your exact number depends on the site visit. Use them to sanity-check any quote you receive.

Ranges assume standard PoE installation with a local NVR. Reused coax wiring, difficult cable runs, or cloud storage subscriptions will move the number up or down.
Ongoing Costs to Budget For
- Cloud storage (optional) — typically billed per camera, per month, if you want off-site backup of footage
- Remote monitoring & alerts — dashboards and notifications if a camera goes offline or storage fills up
- Maintenance — occasional lens cleaning, firmware updates, and replacing a failed camera or drive over the system's lifespan (5–8 years is typical for PoE hardware)
